You hear that Peter McCallister died a few days ago?

Read this report from Blackstone a few days ago and found it kind of interesting. While its good to know that these oils perform similarly when new, 4k miles is not very much use for oil. I’d imagine anything works decently if you change it often enough.

What I’d be most interested in and what this report completely leaves out is how rapidly the oil degrades as you approach recommended oil change intervals. I know a number of carmakers are recommending longer intervals, I think most Toyotas are 7500 miles now?

Seeing a report of the same oil and its performance changed at mileage intervals (3k, 4k, 5k, etc) would be most informative as you’d know when it’s time to change your SuperTech.

Plus, maybe the filters are just working really well and filtering out all the particles like they should?

I wonder how quickly David’s article was posted to the Bob is the Oil Guy forums.

that’ll start another bloody war.

That was exactly my FP comment. I use synthetic for longevity, not for detergents or some notion that it magically reduces short-term wear.

I’ve heard that that stuff doesn’t even have any detergents or anti-wear additives.

filters can screen out solid particles, but there’s more to it. The oils total base number gets depleted over time from neutralizing the combustion by-products of nitric and carbonic acids which get into the oil via blow-by. when TBN is depleted, corrosive contaminants can build up.

I’d be curious how it is with trans fluids. Mysterious gas station brands of unknown provenance are about the only kind of Type A that one can find these days. Type A and Type A Suffix A were more or less replaced by Dexron II and III, but both have slightly different chemistry, and the “normal” replacement for A is a slightly heavy Type F, which in original spec was similar chemistry but a lot lighter...

I’m running Valvoline Type F in my A-A spec transmission because it used to be marketed as FA, but it’s kind of irritating that it’s not an exact match.

Yeah, some transmissions can be really sensitive to the type of fluid, too.

I just went from MFR recommended 7500 miles to 5000 miles on my 2013 subaru. Partly because it has a new short block and party because I think 7500 is a bit too far for a car that is driven like ours is.

I’d never consider running 7500 miles on a break-in oil change. That seems like too long.

I’ve replaced all the major seals, so most likely I’d be fine with Dexron variants... but I don’t know shit about the friction surfaces for sure. And, it continues to be very odd about shifts into 3rd, for what may be reduced pressure reasons or may be “needs to adjust band #2" reasons. Meh, it’s got 96,000 miles on it, so if I ever actually rebuild it I can switch then. New surfaces would probably not object to Dexron.

Well, they did study the Subaru EJ25 heavily. Given the tendency of those engines to eat themselves alive, I think they did study at the recommended oil change interval....

The break in change was 3000 miles, then they go to 7500.

They make/made trans fluid also........ same liquid with a red dye, no joke.

I know from personal experience with my TDI there is hardly any difference between going 2500 miles and 5000. I ended up doing the last service at only 2500, only because I was going to be unable to do it when it reached 5,000, and there was hardly any difference.

And if the universal averages for the engine are coming from 10k OCI’s, then there is only a minute difference between 5k and 10k OCI’s on the CJAA TDI engine. Still never going to go past 5k on an oil change, though.
